Antique 1920’s Eastern Anatolian minimalist earth tone tülü rug. Originally these rugs were produced as sleeping blankets, used by nomadic herders as the densely constructed sheep’s wool provide invaluable warmth. Today these rugs are cherished for their richness of texture and simplicity of pattern. Of course not all tulus are so minimalist in composition but certain regional tribes are known for these neutral albeit strikingly contemporary designs. This piece is hand knotted of natural mohair sheep’s wool and only ever dyed using natural flora and fauna. Deep abrashed chocolate brown background contrasts the stark simple cream coloured geometric design of the combed rectangle at center and banded trim. The long hairs of the wool have been worn quite well throughout although there are patches remaining which add to the one of a kind charm of this piece.
Colour palette: deep chocolate brown and creamy ivory
This pre-loved, antique rug certainly shows signs of wear through the decades. There is a small area on the upper left inside edge of the central rectangle that was repaired who knows when and the lines there appear gathered.
Please refer to photos for this detail. As previously mentioned, the consistency of length in wool hairs varies throughout the piece and although there are patches that are long, the majority has compressed or worn down for a more flat appearance.
As with all of our collection, this historical rug fits beautifully in various aesthetic settings. Whether it be ethnic bohemian, period traditionalist or juxtaposed against a minimalist modern backdrop.
