You are looking at an authentic, madder-dyed, Anatolian sumac also known as soumak rug from the Van region on Turkey. This particular piece is 150 years old. This hand woven, flat weave rug features a geometric animal motif rich with esoteric symbolism. The camel represents wealth and prosperity as it is honoured here because of its importance in the daily life and work of tribal people. The stylized flowers represent the Edenic garden. The star, yildiz, used to express happiness and fertility and the peacock represents immortality. It is woven with wool on wool using the sumac technique which is a traditional method that is part of the regions cultural legacy and is meant to withstand the wear and tear of time. Thicker and more robust than other kilims with a smooth face and ragged back. This piece is a beautiful example in excellent condition, with little wear for its age save for areas of missing fringe.
Colour palette: indigo blue, periwinkle blue, grass green, black, ivory white, cocoa brown, red
This pre-loved, antique rug is in excellent condition for its 150+ years of age although there are areas of fringe missing as can be seen in the photographs.

As with all of the pieces in our collection, this historical sumac is well suited for a variety of aesthetic settings. Whether it be ethnic bohemian, classic traditionalist or juxtaposed against a minimalist modern backdrop.
