Traditional antique 1930's flat-weave Jajim rug from the Balikesir province in Turkey which is slightly inland from the Marmara coast in northwestern Anatolia. Jajim is a brocading technique, with alternating bands of colour. This one of a kind rug has been naturally dyed with organic plant and flower matter. Handwoven into a well-defined pattern of diamonds and crosses with checkered borders. These aesthetic elements are imbued with spiritual protection represented here by the symbol of the cross or hac, to guard the owner against the evil eye. According to the Anatolian belief the cross reduces the power of the evil glance by dividing it into four pieces. The double lined, ivory coloured diamond pattern which signifies the female was likely implemented because the weaver was a woman. Undyed natural cream wool fringe finished ends. The eye-catching color story and symmetry of pattern make this a truly beautiful example of a traditional nomadic Jamin.
Colour palette: chocolate brown, palest seafoam green, emerald green, lapis blue, ivory cream, pale ink blue and saffron red
This pre-loved, antique rug certainly shows signs of mild surface wear although for the age is in very good condition.
As with all of our collection, this historical rug fits beautifully in various aesthetic settings. Whether it be ethnic bohemian, period traditionalist or juxtaposed against a minimalist modern backdrop.
