Vibrant 1940's early Mid 20th Century Afghan jajim. This beauty is entirely composed of hand-spun wool which has been dyed using only organic plant, flower and vegetable matter found in the region. The embroidered pattern throughout this piece is quite delicate in structure which contrasts ever so nicely with the strong cross and hook motif borders. Vibrant, deeply saturated colours interplay with softer, muted and pastels creating a subtle yet noticeable depth within the inherent visual symmetry of design. The stylized flowers represent the Edenic garden and denote fertility. The cross symbols along the innermost border are believed to split the evil eye in quarters minimizing the harmful effects. The hook or çengel outer border motif once again reiterates protection against harmful spiritual energies directed at the one in possession of the rug. Hand woven in the flat weave technique of the region using wool dyed with organic plant, flower and bark matter. Loop and fringe finishing at either end.

Colour palette: saffron red, pale minty green, turquoise, black, taupe grey, ecru, lavender, pepper green and white.

This pre-loved, vintage rug is in phenomenal condition for its age. The strands of yarn seen along side lengths are not tattering but simply yarns from the reverse side.

As with all of our collection, this historical rug fits beautifully in various aesthetic settings. Whether it be ethnic bohemian, period traditionalist or juxtaposed against a minimalist modern backdrop.
