Antique, early 20th century, flat weave wool jajim from the Balikesir province in the Marmara region of Turkey. A quite striking piece handwoven of natural plant dyed wool and composed of alternating bands of colour heavily embellished with ancient cultural symbols of a protective and blessed spiritual nature. The evil eye to ward off the evil glances of humans and meant to protect the owner from misfortune and harm. The arrow to protect against supernatural forces. The cross believed to reduce the power of the evil eye by cutting it into four pieces. The running water motif indicates the essentiality of water for all life and represents a desire to overcome obstacles. The burdock plant symbolises abundance. This is an extraordinarily beautiful piece with a muted yet rich colour palette contrasted by an extravagant array of culturally mystic motifs.
Colour palette: minty sage green, apricot, watermelon, chocolate brown, nude ballet pink, black, muted cinnamon, saffron red, navy blue and buttercream.

This pre-loved, antique rug is in exceptionally well preserved, nearly immaculate condition for it's age. The delicate, flowing fringe is unworn.
