This striking vintage 1940’s jajim originated in the Balikesir province of Northwestern Turkey. A region renowned for the deep-rooted weaving culture of the Yüncü people. Woven entirely by hand of organic madder-dyed sheep’s wool on cotton background. This rug features a rhythmic compostion of multicoloured horizontal stripes and bands interrupted by tribal motifs known as “water channels”. These symbols represent the weavers reverence for one of life’s most sustaining forces. The natural aesthetic variations seen in the co-mingling of saturated and abrashed colours produces a visual effect rich with character that sets these types of rugs apart from their modern counterparts.
Colour palette: emerald green, ink blue, marigold, ochre, lilac, black, off white and saffron red. Solid, deeply saturated hues contrasted by colours of an abrashed nature. Different sheep have varying wool textures and dye absorption abilities, leading to subtle color differences even within the same batch.
