Colorful early 1930's flat-weave Jajim rug from the Balikesir province in Turkey which is slightly inland from the Marmara coast in northwestern Anatolia. Jajim is a brocading technique, with alternating bands of colour. This handwoven wool rug features a series of stripes and bands with symbolic motifs. The eye motif to ward off the evil eye, the ram horn a symbol for power and birds in flight for good news. This piece represents an amalgamation of ancient cultural symbolism, dyes representative of the plants of the region and the character of a colorful life of untold stories. The red colour in the rug field is abrash with a striated, mottled effect that appears faded. Braided tassels at one end and fringe on the other. Tattering can be seen on lower corners though overall this piece is in a very good state of preservation.
Colour palette: ecru cream, pale ink blue, black, minty sage green, pumpkin orange, faded red and deep burgundy red.
This antique, pre-loved rug is in great condition albeit the fringe and braided tassels are a but tatteres as well as the two bottom corners.
As with all of our collection, this historical rug fits beautifully in various aesthetic settings. Whether it be ethnic bohemian, period traditionalist or juxtaposed against a minimalist modern backdrop.
