Early 1940's, Mid-Twentieth Century, Turkish Jajim rug. The composition is handwoven entirely of madder-dyed wool. This piece is from the Sivas area in Turkey. The deep red background is peppered with embroidered geometric motifs symbolic of the region. The ram's horn is a symbol of power, the eye motif to ward off the evil eye and the chest symbol meant for a dowry, the bukagi fetter symbolizes the desire to unite family or a pair of lovers, meant to preserve the love of lovers as it is a wish of the weaver that they would always be together. This piece represents an amalgamation of ancient cultural symbolism, dyes representative of the plants of the region and the character of a rich life unfolding. Overlocked center seam of banded colours taken from the overall palette. The lengths are adorned with melange pom poms and the ends are both fringed and tasseled. In truly exceptional condition. This rug evokes such happy energy is like a natural anti-depressant!
Colour palette: red, seafoam green, turquoise, grass green, white, black, raspberry, pale mauve, mustard gold, indigo blue and pumpkin orange.
